I agree that our relationship with the United States is both crucial and critical to Canada’s prosperity and survival. When Trump began advocating for better trading terms for America and altered the NAFTA framework, what would have been a better Canadian response?
I'm a little surprised Paul, these are pretty strong words of condemnation when we haven't even had an opportunity to hear your alternative to an untenable position that Trump's America has put us in. "a man who persuaded Canadians that he was defending their sovereignty while leading them into an economic and geopolitical experiment they scarcely understood."
Really!
Sometimes a person arrives on the scene at a just in time moment and almost 70% of Canadians believe Carney is " that leader at this moment"
To my recollection he has Never said he did not want a resumption of trade talks or a deal with the USA, he just wants some protection from the tyrannical person and his minions who lead the US government today.
I am disturbed by his deliberate mockery of Trump and the harm it might do (though Trump is worse; he’s an economic illiterate); I know of the statements that Carney has made, and I know of the dangers and the suffering that happen to ordinary working stiffs when ideology that will never harm the elites is put into practice. I qualified my statements, but I believe that Carney has deliberately lied to the public and has tried to misrepresent economic data to present a false image. Canada's economic metrics are very poor, and they started to fall under Trudeau; there is a cost to poor policy. Of course, those who are doing well, have paid for their homes, etc have no worries; they can afford to worship ideologues whose policies lead to job loss and suffering. I have lost 90% of my teaching at one university because of student cuts (which they had to do and were a correction of Trudeau’s foolishness); my daughter couldn’t find a job this summer (unemployment rate for her age is 15%); I lost my main teaching for reasons you know, but it is related to a prov. government that allows unhinged antisemitism to permeate a taxpayer-funded institution. And Carney has consistently given soft support to anti-Israel radicals. He knows there are 5 Muslim votes for 1 Jewish vote, and this is what guides him.
My point is that economic policy can look good from the outside, but high taxation because the government believes it is smarter than the markets and governance to procure votes rather than to help real people has costs. I know Carney’s type; I know his academic history and his history in England; he is a mediocre academic, he is a former radical environmental zealot, and I don’t think he has changed his stripes. My point is not that he is a Chamberlain, but that the public has many times been taken in by such leaders who are tremendous self-marketers who are able to retain power because the consequences of their actions are delayed. Carney, for being in power for 18 months, still has accomplished little; the public may tire of worsening economic numbers, real-life economic pains and the continued refrain of “trust me, I’m Mark Carney”
As a person who has gone through some difficult times then you are better able than most people to exercise excellent judgement and arrive at a conclusion about what Canadians need. I ask you, is it more possibly (?) of what Canadians have put up with for some time now or time to finally arise from stupor.
I think you may be right remembering our last PM we may have "Canadians have put up with (decline) for some time now" There are no easy or short term answers here but he gives us a better shot at drawing more investment even from the USA.
I agree Mary he is the one that pulled the plug however it has been stated that he never said he wished to stop doing business with the United States.
He has several times acknowledged that the US market remains crucial and Canada remains open to resuming serious, respectful trade discussions when the U.S administration is ready. I'm not sure Trump even understands the word "respectful"
Ok. Fine. Agree. Then show Canada's willingness to get back to the table instead of trying to sell ford f150s and fertilizer to the EU. I'm being sarcastic. Besides which Saskatchewan farmers don't want to sell and ship to Europe. Losing proposition.
I agree with your comprehensive, prescient analysis especially the sad facts about Carney supporters en mass being boomer retired women. I'm surrounded by them and yes, they all love Carney, just like they loved and voted for his predecessor partner, who shall remain unnamed. What bothers me most is the fact Carney pulled Canada out of negotiations and is the party not willing to go back. That solidifies for me the fact he is manipulating popular opinion for his benefit and well, fabricating his story.
Thanks for the thorough and thoughtful analysis.

You can not approve of Trump and still not be anti American.
Transparency is needed from Carney.

I am a renter, a part time worker to cover increasing expenses , who has gone through a debilitating bankruptcy so I feel your pain.
However my support of Carney is still based in the right person for the difficult times we're facing
I hope you are right. And if I am wrong it would be a blessing. Being against Carney is not a hill I would die on. Standing with Jews is.
💯 ‼️
For the Naysayers regarding “Standing in Solidarity with Jews”:
If anyone does not believe that “The Blessings and Curses of God”, are no longer in effect -
Take a good hard look at a vacant parking lot.
You will find weeds aplenty growing there, without the benefit of plowing, or sowing.
What you will not find is that which provides sustenance, or a cash crop.
The cursing of the ground, made in Genesis, still stands.
So does God's Pronouncement, regarding Abraham, Issac and Jacob
• Genesis 12:3
And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

My concern is that he refuses to say why and release the transcript.
I see no talk of return to talks by Carney. His is the one that pulled the plug. Not America.

He has substituted “Americans” for “Trump” and that is dangerous. This nuttery is Trump.
Good one! Marx Carnage: no longer just a snarky sobriquet!
