Support Free Speech on Campus
“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” -Voltaire famouusly owns this. But he probably stole it.
Please read the statement below, and if you agree, click on the orange button below or at the end, and by doing so, you will send the same statement to five executives at the University of Guelph, University of Guelph-Humber, and Humber College.
THE BUTTON IS AT THE BOTTOM and HERE BELOW - the second one directly below - (but you should read it before you enter). It is not a survey; you just enter your email first and last name.
PEOPLE ARE CONFUSED AND DON’T SEE THIS BUTTON TO SIGN THE PETITION; I CAN NOT MAKE IT BIGGER. IT IS THE BUTTON RIGHT BELOW
ALL YOU ENTER IS YOUR EMAIL (and then you can hide it, but it must be valid) and your first and last name.
The point is not to expect your influence to change the world but to encourage you to make a principled stand for its own sake.
No email addresses will be shared; they are only for verification.
If nobody shares, this will go nowhere. My subscriber base is too small (about 1000, so to the student who mocked me when I was 14, and I said, give me a year and by Oct. 11, I’ll be at 1000, here I come, haha, bitter laugh.
And if you are too disinterested or disengaged or - “I’m afraid of what my friends might think!” to share?
This mentality is exactly the problem.
Past generations sent their sons to die for freedom in wars. Today’s generation is afraid of not getting a like on IG.
As a culture, we must embrace free speech, not just send a casual wink its way.
The point is not just to keep Professor Paul Finlayson’s job; he likely will be fired because a mob that included the VP has risen to attack him for his audacity. He said he stood with Israel and that Hamas are terrorists, and it hurt the feelings of the mob. Oh no.
This rising mob seems to have unwarranted power at all three institutions.
The hypocrisy is so rich, considering his accuser has Rate My Professor comments that speak of the accuser running down Jews in class, and the accuser has hundreds of anti-Semitic posts on his social media, including LinkedIN. Do Jews matter at these institutions?
Was the accuser suspended, defamed, banished, or was his job threatened? No action was taken. Finlayson's accuser's LinkedIN base has swollen to 66K. Very high for a professor at a no-name school. I’m quite content sitting around 600 for years; being a nobody isn’t that bad. It gives you more time to read.
Yes, this is still about Finlayson calling Hamas Nazis. Is a mountain being made out of a molehill? It's more like a range of mountains.
Even the text of the stranger in Southeast Asia that Finlayson responded to, along with Finlayson's original text, is lost. All there is is a mob of digital warriors manipulating the truth and hysterically attacking Finlayson. And to their shame, all three institutions, which should be the adults in the room, have not defended free speech or Finlayson.
Indeed, many staff and management have joined the mob.
Finlayson's unions, his sole legal representation, CUPE 3913 and OPSEU 562 - are either being sued for anti-semitism or declaring their hatred of Israel at union gatherings. But they claim no bias!
They have refused to meet with Finlayson or call him in ten months - they have effectively checked out.
Today, it is Finlayson against three institutions with no support other than random and passionate friends, family and strangers, mostly Jewish.
Some free speech seems freer than others at the University of Guelph, Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber.
It is Orwellian.
Below is my accuser’s new map, hey, where’s Israel.
(I left for coffee so I had my dog take over the class. The class noted that the new teacher was better looking and stayed on topic better)
(Not exactly a stellar report card on the University of Guelph on their practises. They are not as bad as they used to be. Perhaps if you respond to nobody, you will get sympathy. C. )
Finlayson's suspension is now ten months; the pressure and abuse have led to the WSIB declaring that Finlayson has a workplace injury caused by Guelph-Humber.
It is PTSD. You have all treated him like a criminal, and actual staff and faculty (not students only) have actively defamed him and invented stories of him assaulting a student. Even on the day he was suspended without a charge (a month before he was told about a human rights complaint), anonymous executives threatened Finlayson and called for his termination. Staff were circulating lies about "assault" and denigrating his stellar teaching record.
You have the evidence, and you have failed to act.
The witnesses are willing to speak, but you will not listen.
The Humber Human Rights Department is being used as a political weapon.
It's dangerous. It's Canada.
You can fire an innocent man, and you will hear from the public about that, but I say shame on Guelph, Humber, and Guelph-Humber.
Shame on the executives who refuse to respond to these allegations, who hide behind their lawyers who threaten and abuse Finlayson, who hide behind public safety officers.
How many hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent on this vendetta against Finlayson?
Guelph-Humber's response to Finlayson going to his office to get personal items, including his late father's will - items precious to him?
A trespass order. A threat of a 10K fine.
These three institutions, led by GH’s VP and others, have declared war on one man.
But the greater danger is that our society is forgetting free speech.
It is shameful that post-secondary institutions are the worst offenders.
Free speech matters. Canadians are asleep and must wake up, open their mouths, show courage and act more like Americans.
Keeping silent is not polite; it is cowardly.
Speak up, Canada. Enough.

I, <<first name>> <<last name>>, agree with the above message. I ask you to reinstate Finlayson, compensate him for the harm you have caused, change your policies on free speech, and hold the managers and executives who, either by action or inaction, have created this abandonment of free speech for Finlayson. Silence is consent to the mob. It must end. Show courage.

The top is fan mail. The lower is defamation, indicating 20 student workers who spread lies. Reputation and legacy matter in the real world but not in the world of the unions and these three institutions. They don’t give a rip. But I’m sure there was no organized plan to spread lies, and Winnipeg will be a smoking BBQ wonderland this January.
More fan mail that was initiated by the mob.
584 retweets! Wow. I’ve never got more than four.
It’s so easy to manipulate these posts. I changed the words Palestinian gov. to Israel in the middle. It’s comical.
“The best lack all conviction.”

This post is a free sponsorship for Regalport Ltd. They recently redid our backyard; it had an enormous deck with no practical value, the lawn was overgrown, and it did not meet the family’s needs; it was rarely used—a pretty crappy small back lawn.
We are all happy with the changes and recommend Regalport 100%.
They didn’t pay for this recommendation, although Bobby and Nick gave me two bottles of Ouzo. They are both young Greek fellows and after drinking Ouzo straight, I appreciated the mix but thought the mulch out back might taste better.
Bobby, Nick, and their team redid our backyard and did a great job. We did go over budget, but we had to do so as water had pooled under our deck. They were always on time. They were always polite. They clean up after themselves. And they never left a mess. They did not try to upsell us; they started early, ended late, and only did one job at a time, not working on multiple jobs simultaneously.
I would recommend them for back and front yard renovations and landscaping. I have not been paid to say this, but if you contact them, say Paul referred you. I won’t get a finder’s fee. This is an honest recommendation. They will do our front yard and driveway when I can afford it—hopefully in the spring.
