Ah, the term anti-Zionist—that fashionable fig leaf for what often amounts to a rather antique prejudice dressed in modern academic garb. Suppose your opposition to the Jewish state means advocating for the expulsion or extermination of its 9 million inhabitants, as some of your ideological kin have implied in their more candid moments. In that case, one must inquire: to which mythical homeland do you propose shipping these inconvenient souls?
Europe, perhaps, where synagogues still require armed guards? Or America, where campus chants of “from the river to the sea” echo with the subtlety of a pogrom?
Israel has chronicled how such rhetoric, post–October 7, 2023, has morphed into calls for “de-Zionizing” the land, which in plain English means erasing its Jewish character—a plan about as realistic as expecting Hamas to embrace veganism.
The definition of anti-Zionism is opposition to Jewish self-determination, often veiling a deeper animus that spares no other nation’s right to exist—save, curiously, the one rebuilt from the ashes of the Holocaust. This “anti-Zionism” is less a principled stance than a selective hatred, ignoring the fact that Israel’s Arab citizens enjoy rights undreamed of in neighbouring theocracies.
Pray, elucidate your definition. Is it the polite version, or the one that ends with “globalise the intifada”?
Exhibit A: Apply Your Own Criteria, Everywhere
Before we even get into October 7, let’s play a simple thought experiment. If the standard you apply to Israel is consistent—that a country born in conflict, through contested borders, should simply pack up and “un-country itself”—then you must be ready to demand the same of nearly everyone.
Tell me, wise one: do you believe that all borders throughout history were unilaterally accepted? Have you ever read a single history book?
Let’s list them:
The United States: founded on the ashes of native peoples, born in rebellion and conquest. Should 330 million Americans pack up and “go back” to Europe?
Canada: stitched together by treaties ignored and land expropriated. Pack your bags, Ottawa.
Australia: a penal colony was dropped on Aboriginal land. Should Sydney hand the keys back?
Pakistan: born in blood in 1947, millions displaced, borders contested with India ever since. Still waiting for the “anti-Pakistanists” to demand de-partition.
Turkey: sitting atop the Byzantine Empire’s grave, forged by war and extermination. Any takers for un-countrying Ankara?
Every Arab state: carved by colonial powers with rulers imposed from above. Not a border in the Middle East exists without violence, yet only Israel is told to vanish.
And while we’re on colonialism, let’s mention the elephant—or rather, the camel—in the room: Muhammad himself was the ultimate colonialist. From Medina, he launched wars that spread Islam by the sword across vast swaths of Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Entire peoples were converted, conquered, or culled. Yet strangely, this brand of colonialism doesn’t earn the jeers of the campus decolonizers. No TikTok lectures about “Islamic settler-colonialism,” no op-eds about the Arabization of Berbers, Persians, or Jews. That colonialism is apparently fine—divinely sanctioned even—because to notice it would make the moral algebra collapse.
So tell me: where else do you apply this standard? Or is it only the one Jewish state that must pack its bags, lock its doors, and dissolve into the ether?
Your “anti-Zionism” is not a principle. It’s prejudice with a flimsy intellectual ribbon.
Exhibit B: What Should Israel Have Done? Sent a Hallmark Card?
What would the ideal reaction have been when Israel had war declared against it on October 7, 2023?
Do you infer that Israel should have done nothing and just say, “No problem, please don’t do it again”?
One can only marvel at the pacifist utopia you envision, where a nation subjected to the barbaric slaughter of 1,200 innocents—proportionally equivalent to 48,000 Americans massacred in a single dawn raid—responds with a polite memo begging for mercy.
Hamas’s October 7 onslaught involved not just murder but rape, beheadings, and the abduction of 251 hostages, many still languishing in Gaza’s labyrinthine hellholes as of August 2025.
Ideal reaction? Perhaps a strongly worded tweet? A TikTok dance of solidarity? A UN resolution in scented stationery? Or better yet: a Hallmark card reading, “Sorry you hate us, hope we can still be friends.”
Tell me, wise one—since you scorn every actual act of self-defence—what precisely should Israel have done? Nobody has an answer to this.
And if you push the “I’m not anti-Semitic, I’m just anti-Zionist” crowd hard enough, after a few beers, they’ll finally burp out the truth: “Well, Israel deserved it after all.”
And then the mask slips. The true ugliness oozes out. What began as “restraint” rhetoric curdles into Schadenfreude and, soon enough, into the open fantasy of Israel’s destruction.
Exhibit C: History’s Ledger Doesn’t Support Your Fantasy
Can you give examples in world history where the same percentage of national citizens (.00013 of the population) were killed, and there was no military reaction?
This would mean 48,000 innocent Americans slaughtered, plus hostages taken, and the U.S. military offering no response. Please, explain how you think this would happen.
History—being that inconvenient ledger of human folly—offers no such precedent for passive surrender to mass murder. Unless one counts the appeasement of tyrants, which invariably ends in more blood.
October 7’s toll equates to 9/11 multiplied by 16, and no nation ever shrugged off such an assault.
Pearl Harbor’s 2,403 dead (proportional to ~7,000 today) provoked America’s righteous fury—not a therapy session. Imagine 48,000 Americans butchered in one morning. Would Biden send a fruit basket?
Tell me, wise one.
This scoffs at the notion, citing 9/11’s 2,977 dead leading to global wars, not hand-wringing restraint. Your pacifism seems reserved for Jews under fire—how quaintly selective.
Exhibit D: Intent Matters—Or At Least It Used To
Do you believe it is morally equivalent to attack, murder, and burn citizens alive, as Hamas did, versus non-combatants dying as “collateral damage” when Israel targets Hamas after dropping millions of warning leaflets and even dummy bombs?
In criminal law, intent is everything. But not, it seems, in the moral algebra of the anti-Israel brigades.
Hamas’s October 7 orgy of rape, incineration, and kidnapping was deliberate evil, intent on maximising terror. Israel’s painstaking efforts to minimise casualties—7 million leaflets, dummy bombs, evacuation warnings—are ignored. Hamas uses hospitals and schools as bunkers; Israel tries to avoid them.
Yet you collapse all distinctions into the same bland slurry: dead is dead. How very sophisticated. How very convenient.
Intent evaporates in your equation because to admit it would ruin the performance.
Exhibit E: Wipe Out Governments Who Declare Genocide—Yes or No?
Do you think Israel has the right to wipe out a government next door that has declared war against their nation and whose charter literally enshrines their destruction?
Yes or no?
One suspects your “no” would come with caveats longer than a UN resolution. Hamas’s charter calls for annihilation. Iran supplies arms. Billions in aid have been diverted to terror tunnels.
And yet you hesitate at self-defence?
Tell me, why didn’t the Allies leave the Nazis in power? Why not cut a deal with Hitler? Surely he would have been reasonable, right? That’s essentially what you demand of Israel with Hamas. You don’t apply it anywhere else.
And another detail: if Israel didn’t use airpower and advanced weaponry, but instead only sent soldiers into a tunnelled urban environment, thousands of IDF soldiers would die.
But the urban warfare experts at the University of Guelph—the same people who think saving a breached calf qualifies them to lecture about counterinsurgency—insist this is what Israel must do.
Would you fight this way? Would your country? Tell me.
Exhibit F — “Armchair Generals,” Urban War, and the Physics of Tunnels
Claim you keep dodging: Israel should fight “surgically” in dense cities, preferably without airpower, and accept far higher IDF losses to spare civilians—even while Hamas hides under hospitals and apartment blocks.
Reality you never answer: Urban combat against a tunnel-embedded enemy is designed to maximise friendly casualties. Gaza’s subterranean network is hundreds of miles long—estimates in late 2024 put it at roughly 350–450 miles—purpose-built to protect fighters, store weapons, and pop up beneath schools and wards. Numbers you avoid: Israel issued mass evacuation warnings—SMS/robocalls and millions of paper leaflets directing civilians to move before operations; even critics concede the IDF drops “millions of pamphlets.” That’s not a moral panacea, but it’s also not the cartoon you chant about.
The bit you refuse to say out loud: If the IDF “just went in on foot,” in a booby-trapped warren with vertical ambush points and IED belts, thousands of Israeli soldiers would be killed. No serious military proposes “fight with one arm tied behind your back” to flatter the sensibilities of activists whose closest brush with urban warfare is a campus die-in. Urban-warfare analysts who actually study this conflict have repeatedly said Israel’s combination of evacuation, precision strikes, and ground clearing—even when you hate it—is unusually restrained by historical standards.
Tell me, wise one: if you were running an army, would you order your infantry into a mined, ventilated ant-farm so your Instagram can feel morally moisturised? Or would you do what every state does—use standoff fires and ground manoeuvre to break a tunnel army that chose to embed under civilians?
Exhibit G — Prisoners vs. Hostages: Stop the Moral Inversion
Your trope: “Palestinian prisoners are the same as Israeli hostages.”
No, they aren’t: On October 7, Hamas and allied death squads abducted ~251 people from homes, roads, and a music festival; months later, scores remained in captivity in Gaza’s tunnels. That’s abduction for leverage against a civilian population. Released “prisoners” in swaps often include people convicted of stabbing, shootings, or bomb-making. List every border you believe was unilaterally “accepted.” Or admit what is obvious: your “principle” is a bespoke cudgel, applied only to the Jew among the nations.
Tell me, wise one: are all borders supposed to be settled with the consent of everyone on both sides, at all times, into perpetuity? Have you read a single history book? Or is it just that, like so many of your colleagues in the faculty lounge, you would rather posture with your moral algebra than face the archaeological, historical, and moral reality that Israel is as rooted in its land as any people on earth?
Exhibit I — Casualty Ratios: Your Standard for Israel vs. Everyone Else
You circulate a magic, undefined “acceptable” civilian-to-combatant ratio. Then you discover actual history and fall silent.
WWII: Allied campaigns (including city bombing) produced staggering civilian ratios relative to Pearl Harbor’s 2,403 dead—yet were judged necessary to end the war.
Post-9/11: The U.S. didn’t answer 2,977 murdered with a Hallmark card; it launched wars with civilian tolls orders of magnitude higher than a single-day attack.
Whatever number you whisper for Gaza, at least have the integrity to compare it to what every other democracy has actually done in a major war—and explain why Jews alone must absorb slaughter and reply with scented candles. And in Gaza, the governing faction (Hamas) literally has a charter calling for Israel’s elimination. You’re proposing to negotiate statehood with a movement whose founding documents delete the other side. Tell me, wise one: draft the negotiating terms with a party that denies your right to exist. Exhibit K — Comparators You Never Use: Fallujah, Aleppo, Grozny
You hold Israel to a fictional, uniquely kosher standard—one no army has ever met in dense urban war.
Assad’s Syria flattened neighbourhoods with indiscriminate barrel bombs and siege warfare; hospitals were deliberate targets.
Russia in Chechnya (Grozny) treated a capital like a free-fire zone.
The U.S. in Fallujah/Mosul faced insurgents in dense cities and used a combined-arms approach—air, armour, artillery, infantry—because sending riflemen street-by-street into IED corridors is a meat grinder

That is not my claim; it’s described across open-source military studies and NATO-aligned analyses of human-shielding as a strategy. The point of hiding under civilians is twofold: operational protection and PR leverage when civilians die. That’s not a bug; it’s the business model.
Tell me, wise one: identify another movement that so systemically turns its own civilians into blast-absorbing press releases—and then boasts about it.

Money earmarked for welfare, water, and reconstruction didn’t go to desalination plants. It went downward.

Before October 7, tens of thousands of Gazans crossed into Israel for work; permit numbers climbed from ~7,000 in 2021 to ~17,000 in 2022, with plans for 20,000. A prison that issues day passes to work in the warden’s house is a peculiar penitentiary indeed.
And yes, Israeli authorities later assessed that some workers abused that access to map communities and facilitate the slaughter, not “all,” but enough to matter. Tell me, wise one: what prison lets inmates roam the guard’s kitchen unsupervised?
Exhibit O — “Genocide” vs. Words That Mean Things
If your claim is “genocide,” you must explain why a supposed exterminator spends its time broadcasting evacuation maps, opening corridors, and enabling massive aid flows (see next exhibit). And you must wrestle with the fact that population metrics and casualty accounting are contested, politicised, and—yes—in flux.
Even reporting hostile to Israel concedes the numbers are entangled in propaganda and the absence of independent auditing. Exhibit Q — Egypt’s Rafah and the Missing “Safe Zone”
You demand Israel create “safe zones,” but you never demand Egypt open Sinai. Cairo ring-fenced Rafah, citing security and permanence concerns; the world mostly shrugged. The one neighbour that could have staged a large-scale sanctuary chose not to—and you saved your outrage for Jerusalem.
Tell me, wise one: if genocide were the goal, wouldn’t Israel manufacture a “safe zone” and herd civilians into it for the cameras?
Exhibit R — Rockets, Refugees, and the Hezbollah Front You Pretend Isn’t There
While you focus on Gaza, you overlook the ongoing northern war of attrition.
Hezbollah has launched ~13,000 rockets into Israel over the last year alone, escalating beyond “pinprick” harassment.
Displacement: Israel cleared its northern border towns; ~60,000 Israelis remain evacuated from the north, many months later, with further displacement in the south at the war’s peak. That is the scale in a country of ~9 million.
Tell me, wise one: Britain didn’t ignore the Blitz. Why do you insist Israelis should?
Exhibit S — Aid and the “Starvation” Claim
The reality is ugly and politically weaponised from all sides: aid has been massive and contested.
Israel’s facilitation claims: by mid-2025, Israeli authorities said they had enabled ~1.8 million tonnes of aid into Gaza; UN agencies dispute sufficiency and distribution; looting and black-market diversion are documented. The picture is chaos, not a simple chokehold.
But let us ask: when, in the entire annals of history, has a state that was invaded, had its civilians butchered and its children burned alive, been declared fully responsible for supplying breakfast, lunch, and dinner to the very population that cheered the invaders on? Tell me, wise one—was London obliged to keep Hamburg in herring during the Blitz? Did Roosevelt send grocery hampers to Tokyo between Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima? Did Poland owe the Wehrmacht grain shipments after the September 1939 invasion? If so, where is this Geneva-cum-Disneyland statute, this miraculous “Law of War by Hallmark,” where the victim is conscripted into feeding and clothing the aggressor?
If your standard is “invaders owe full sustenance to the enemy territory while being rocketed from it,” then please publish the law book where that appears—and while you’re at it, show us the chapter where Hamas’s theft of aid, conversion of cement into bunkers, and billions sunk into death-tunnels rather than hospitals are given a moral blank check.
One is tempted to conclude that what you want is not law, nor even humanity, but a special jurisprudence for Jews alone: to bleed when cut, to supply bread when slaughtered, to bow while their enemies sharpen knives.
Exhibit T — The Thing You Say When the Beers Kick In
Push the “I’m not anti-Semitic, I’m anti-Zionist” chorus long enough—keep asking for the alternative plan, the precise ratios, the borders standard applied globally—and you’ll hear the real answer after pint three: “Well, Israel deserved it.”
And then the mask slips. The Hallmark-card diplomacy, the scented-candle pacifism, the moral algebra for idiots—it all dissolves into the oldest hatred with a seminar syllabus paper-clipped on top.
Tell me, wise one: if the Allied standard in 1945 was not to leave the Nazis in power “to save lives,” why is your bespoke 2025 standard that Israel must leave Hamas intact?
Would that have worked with Hitler, too, in your refined arithmetic? Yes or no.
