Beyond the Levant: Global Blindness
The Arab world does not hold a monopoly on anti‑Black racism. India’s mobs lynch African students in Greater Noida (2017). Chinese landlords in Guangzhou evicted Africans en masse during COVID — “health measures,” they called it.
Russia’s skinhead gangs hunt Africans in metro stations; Eastern Europe’s far right spits slurs like “crow” (cioară) at Black migrants. Mauritania still had hereditary slavery in 2024. And yet, Western activists reserve their moral thunder exclusively for Europe and America.
My Indian friend had a beautiful baby girl. Her mother’s first question? “Is the baby fair?” Not “Is she healthy?” Not “Is she breathing?” Fair. As in pale. As in not too brown. India’s billion-dollar skin-lightening industry — Fair & Lovely now coyly renamed “Glow & Lovely” to spare us the obvious — exists for a reason.
